On December 2, 1947, due to a huge storm, the biggest maritime tragedy occurred on the Portuguese coast, sinking 4 trawlers causing the death of their sailors, only 6 survived, this sculpture symbolizes the gestures of pain, distress and screams of despair in the face of tragedy, work by artist João Brito

Inspired by a painting by the famous Augusto Gomes, a great artist from Matosinhos, the sculptural ensemble "Tragedy at Sea", by José João Brito (2005) remembers the greatest nautical tragedy ever recorded on Portuguese waters: the tempest of 1-2 December 1947, in which several fishing boats sank off Leixões Port, causing the death of 152 crew members and pain and despair in the whole community. 72 widows and 152 orphans came out of this tragedy.

In July 2005, this sculpture by José João Brito was inaugurated, paying tribute to the families and victims of the sinking of four trawlers that occurred in 1947 and killed 152 fishermen.
