Praça Marquês de Pombal is the central square of Vila Real de Santo António, a border town on the east coast of the Algarve, near Spain. The square is symmetrically laid out in the neoclassical style, designed in the 18th century under the direction of the Marquês de Pombal after the 1755 earthquake. Surrounded by white buildings with ornate facades and checkerboard-patterned streets, the square forms the heart of the city and a beautiful example of Pombaline urban planning.
