Bourtange is an inhabited former fortress in the Netherlands. It is located in the Dutch province of Groningen, two kilometers from the German-Dutch border near Dörpen. Bourtange belongs to Westerwolde, whose part of the municipality Vlagtwedde therefore has a cannon in its coat of arms. Wikipedia

Bourtange Fortress is located near the German border in beautiful Westerwolde. It is an incomparable historical defensive structure.

Fortress Bourtange was built under the command of William the Silent and completed in 1593. Its original purpose was to control the only road between Germany and the city of Groningen, which was controlled by the Spanish during the Eighty Years' War. After experiencing its last battle in 1672, the fortress continued to serve in the defensive network on the German border until it was finally abandoned in 1851 and converted into a village. Bourtange now serves as a 'living' historical museum with authentic cafes, restaurants and accommodations.

A historic fortified town, Bourtange is known for its beautifully preserved fortifications. In the 20th century, Bourtange fell into disrepair, but in the 1960s a large-scale restoration project began to restore the fortress to its former glory. Today, Bourtange is an open-air museum where you can enjoy the restored fortifications, historic buildings and museums that highlight the city's history and military strategies of the time.
