Tranquility and warm, luxurious hospitality are the essence of Kasteel Geulle, the home of Alphons and Ariane Tonino. Geulle lies on the right bank of the Meuse River, where the rolling hills of Limburg meet the steeper Ardennes. The house and its English-style garden are surrounded by a moat teeming with carp and pike. Despite its remoteness, Geulle is only 12 km from Maastricht, the heart of the Dutch Burgundian lifestyle. Aachen (Germany) and Liège (Belgium) are just a few kilometers away.

Neercanne Castle was built on the original site of Roman fortifications, the caves of which still exist and are used as wine cellars. The original staircase with a banister on wide columns is still in the hall. The ceiling features relief depictions of weapon trophies. The castle is currently in use as a hotel and restaurant.

The current castle is a fortification of the 17th century castle, which was demolished in 1847. The impressive castle is surrounded by a wide moat and there is a gatehouse on the west side, which you can reach via an arched bridge. The stables of the old moated castle, Geulle Castle, demolished in 1850, have been converted into comfortable accommodation with elegantly landscaped gardens within the moat.

Many pretty places along the water of the Geul invite you to linger, shop and try the local Limburg specialties.

A beautiful historic old town with sandstone houses, situated along the Geul River. Above the town, perched on a rock, are the ruins of Valkenburg Castle. The pedestrian zone in the historic center offers numerous restaurants, cafés, and bars, many with lovely outdoor seating. In winter, charming Christmas markets are held in two spacious caves and throughout the town center. Absolutely worth seeing!

The current castle is the remaining outer bailey, a remnant of a 17th-century Renaissance castle that was demolished in 1847. The remaining outer bailey is a national monument.

The Cannerbos is very compact and can therefore be walked in a morning or afternoon. You could say that the forest consists of floors, so you can view and walk nature from below and from higher up. Chateau Neercanne is located on the edge of the Cannerbos. This castle is the only terraced castle in the Benelux. Daniël Wolf van Dopff built this impressive castle in 1698.

The castle garden is not always open. The castle itself, which is worth seeing, is privately inhabited and therefore not accessible. Unfortunately, the residents also park their cars right in front of the door, which significantly spoils the view. There is a brasserie behind the archway - when I was there I was greeted in the gate by smoke from the staff smoking there, not exactly inviting.
