In 2012, the small hamlet of Hamingen, near Staphorst, made headlines when it was supposedly put “up for sale”. An estate agent put four of the six farms up for sale together and presented it as a unique opportunity to buy your own village. With the playful appeal “Who wants to become mayor of their own village?” he attracted a lot of attention. An open day was even organised with guided tours for interested parties. In the end, it turned out to be a clever publicity stunt: there was no buyer for the entire hamlet, but the action did generate national and even international media attention.
