In the Vechte valley near Engden, the Vechte can overflow onto agricultural fields and meadows even during light to moderate flooding. The attractive cycle path that leads over the rustic Vechte bridge through the Vechte valley is then very quickly flooded and impassable.

"Little Venice" is a new district of around 18 hectares in the center of Nordhorn and was built on the former premises of the textile factory Ludwig Povel & Co, which went bankrupt in 1979. This modern and densely populated district was completed around 2008 and is also very attractive due to its close proximity to the popular inner city and old town of Nordhorn. Since canal-like waterways run through this new idyllic residential area and it is largely bordered by the Vechte and the Nordhorn-Almelo canal, it is also known as the "Water Town of Povel".

At normal water levels, the narrow Vechte only flows through a small part of the wide bridge. This looks completely different during heavy flooding. Then the entire width of the bridge is flooded. It is quite a natural spectacle.

The "Blue Bridge", which is officially called the "Vechte outflow bridge", consists of a blue-painted steel structure. The flooring of the narrow pedestrian and bicycle bridge is made of wooden planks. A busy bicycle route in Nordhorn runs over the almost graceful bridge, which spans the Vechte river flowing out of the Vechtesee.

A completely different heath than expected. The juniper heath in the Tillenberge nature reserve offers a very pleasant sandy and barren heath landscape. Here the focus is not on the heather but rather on the grasslands with the juniper trees. Sheep keep the landscape free of excessive tree growth. Very impressive and worth a stop 👍

In the Middle Ages, the village was separated from the Nordhorn parish and became a church village itself. The first church, a daughter church of Nordhorn, was under the patronage of Saint Christopher. Perhaps a wooden church building was initially built, but the current building, the Evangelical Reformed Church, dates from around 1450 and is typical of the area: a nave built on a hill on the left bank of the Vechte in simple Gothic style from Bentheim sandstone with a defensive-looking west tower, which dates from 1505 according to an inscription.
