Fairburn Ings nature reserve is managed by the RSPB. It used to be a coal mine but has been transformed over the last 60 years to a haven for wildlife. It's an important breeding and nesting site for water birds. The star species that you may see are Bittern, Willow Tit, Kingfisher, Tree Sparrow and Spoonbill. The visitor centre has information, toilets and a cafe. It's open 10:00 - 17:00 in the summer and 10:00 - 16:00 in the winter.

It's a bit bumpy-lumpy in places if you're on a road bike with skinny tyres but still nice to ride. Can get a bit muddy when it's wet.

Nice way out of ferry bridge avoiding the most of the dual carriage way.

Beautiful spot to stop and have a drink and some food. Although be warned, it is a cash only establishment and does not accept card payments. Fortunately a very nice Dad and Daughter out for a motorbike ride were very kind and paid for a Latte.

Lovely tranquil spot for a little pleasant cuppa, cafe was closed this Monday but we had coffee with us, quite a few folk around so must be popular.

This bridge can be used to get between Ferrybridge and Brotherton/Byram without going on the bypass dual carriageway

The Old Bridge is hidden away under a tangle of newer concrete flyovers, where the Great North Road crosses the River Aire. It’s traffic-free and provides a quieter route for cyclist and walkers to cross. The Old Bridge you see here was rebuilt as a result of a competition advertised in a local paper, the Leeds Mercury, in 1797. The winner was John Carr, a well respected architect from York. A surveyor named Bernard Hartley was engaged to build the design which was completed in 1804. By April 1803 the cost of the work was around £24,864, with £142 being spent on 'ale' for the workmen in one year alone!

The 6-mile long Selby Canal was opened in 1778 as the Industrial Revolution began to make way in the UK. The canal was used to transport goods, especially to York nearby. Since 1985 the canal has been user by pleasure boaters on canal holidays.

Popular with cyclists - fast service, very reasonable prices, and always a smile and a warm welcome.

Watch out for the gliders, also rough surface.
