The old distillery in Bassum at the foot of the collegiate church was built in 1865 and closed in 1987. Since then it has eked out an existence as a "lost place". The Freudenburg shaped the town of Bassum in its early days. The medieval lowland castle was probably designed as a hilltop castle and was enlarged over time. From 1852 to 1974, the Freudenberg district court had its administrative headquarters here. Since the end of the 1960s, the area with the castle buildings has been owned by the state of Lower Saxony, which took over the renovation of the buildings and at the same time created a charming park. Since 1993, conferences and seminars of the municipal adult education center and the district have taken place in the Freudenburg.
