Surprising park that you wouldn't expect to be behind the church very relaxing

The old distillery in Bassum at the foot of the collegiate church was built in 1865 and closed in 1987. Since then it has eked out an existence as a "lost place". Now the rooms of the old factory are to be brought back to life - let's see whether the investor has a lucky hand and pleases the citizens of Bassum with a sensible use.

The Freudenburg shaped the town of Bassum in its early days. The medieval lowland castle was probably designed as a hilltop castle and was enlarged over time. From 1852 to 1974, the Freudenberg district court had its administrative headquarters here. Since the end of the 1960s, the area with the castle buildings has been owned by the state of Lower Saxony, which took over the renovation of the buildings and at the same time created a charming park. Since 1993, conferences and seminars of the municipal adult education center and the district have taken place in the Freudenburg.

A lovely little zoo with no admission charge, but donations are appreciated. Summer opening hours: 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM. The goats in the petting zoo can be fed apple or carrot pieces. Perhaps bring something from home? We were lucky, and there was a box of 🍎🥕 on site.

The old areas of the Bassum central landfill were closed in the years 2016-20 in such a way that (hopefully) hazards to the air, soil and groundwater are permanently excluded. Now these 12 hectares are a local recreation area at its best. From the 88m high "summit" of the "Upper Utkiek" you can see the windmill parade in the north and south. Here, and also in the "Unteren Utkiek" area, there are shelters and various playground elements. The great natural climbing path stands out, on which kids have a lot of fun going up and down. In addition, the area is peppered with various fitness stations - a nice jog with a few additional exercises is also an option here. In the northern area, down in the valley, there is a picnic area by the pond, also with a small playground.
