Beautiful shelter on the outskirts of town.

Prisoners of war Russians, Belgians and French dug canals and ditches. Finds of barbed wire not far from today's sports field in Großmoor are a reminder of the first people who lived here. They did not come voluntarily: They were prisoners of war from the First World War. Housed in a barracks camp that the first prisoners had built themselves in 1914, around 1,000 men from Russia, Belgium, France, Italy and England worked here at the same time. They dug canals and drainage ditches in the area of the Adamsgraben and the Neue Aue. In doing so, they created a fundamental prerequisite for the later settlement of the Grosser Moor. The local population has retained the name "Russenweg". The expression recalls how the prisoners - mostly Russians - marched from the camp in Großmoor along today's Waldstraße to Wittekop for their work assignment.
