Federal Chapel, Brunnen The Trinity Chapel, also known as the Federal Chapel, stands exactly where the second oath of the Confederation is said to have taken place in 1315. After the vow of 1291 on the Rütli meadow between the three original cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden had proved its worth in the Battle of Morgarten, they renewed the alliance against foreign governors in 1315 in Brunnen. The chapel dedicated to the Trinity was built on this site in memory of this. A large part of the village was reduced to rubble by a fire on May 16, 1620. The village was then rebuilt according to old plans. In the course of this, Landammann Heinrich Reding acquired a site in the middle of the village and built the Federal Chapel in 1632. His son Wolf Dietrich donated the high altarpiece, a work by Rubens' student Justus von Egmont. It was one of his most valuable paintings and is now owned by the canton of Schwyz. There are also two polished white wooden figures in the chapel, depicting Saint Henry and Saint Helena. On the side wall are the figures of the apostles Peter and Paul, which probably come from the Fourteen Holy Helpers Chapel. The Pietà is a copy of the work of art stolen from the chapel in 1980. In 1990, the chapel was restored, restoring the room to its original proportions and holiness. The section of the Axenstrasse from Sisikon to Flüelen always offers fantastic views of the lake. This section is currently still passable for bicycles, on cycle paths that are often separated from the car lane; the section from Brunnen to Sisikon is currently closed to bicycles!! (Bus replacement service, but only a few bikes every hour...)
