Beautiful Bungay. peaceful and tranquil

The magnificent medieval church was first documented in 1369; the detached tower was completed in 1540. It is not located in the usual location because the builders apparently had concerns about placing it too close to the cliff. It is said to be open in the summer and can be climbed. Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson's parents were married here in 1749; his father had previously been a vicar here.

Nice views of the cruisers on the Waveney although the road pinches as it crosses the bridge so you can't stop to admire them.

Bridge Street is a pretty and colourful little street that leads from the heart of Bungay to the River Waveney. The characterful Chequers Inn is one of the oldest buildings in the town and dates from the 17th century. The pub serves good local ale and has a beer garden.

After you cross the bridge it looks like private land but it’s totally fine and a public footpath

This "Footpath" can get used quite heavily by mountain bikers so be aware. Their generally a good bunch though 👍🏻

Running over the old iron bridge you will be treated to boating views along the River Quay. A stone bridge crossed the river before but it was too narrow for newer, grander boats to pass under so this was built as an upgrade in 1884.

Back in 1986, a hoard of 51 Saxon coins and a Saxon brooch were found in Barsham Marshes by the river bank. An excavation of timber posts dating to 75BC has also taken place in the area.

The River Waveney runs from Redgrave in Suffolk to Breydon Water, Great Yarmouth and acts as the boundary between Norfolk and Suffolk. From Beccles bridge, the river is tidal so has a very different feel beyond this point.

Beccles is a picturesque town on the edge of the Broads. The old iron bridge (built 1884), crossing the River Waveney offers great views of the boats moored up at the quay.

Bungay has some great shops the Earsham St Deli, The Frontroom , The Little Green Wholefoods and Ma Belle Bakery are well worth a visit and all bring something different for your food based needs

This area has a fascinating history from the Saxons and Romans to maritime history and farming. Beccles Museum is usually open throughout the summer season, from April to October. Located in the west of historic Beccles, just at the top of the pretty Cliff House Steps, you’ll find the entrance through the wonderful garden at the back of the building. This museum holds a fascinating cornucopia of local history, with outstanding exhibitions revealing the milling, malting, farming and engineering past of the area. It has information and exhibitions covering neighbouring settlements like Barsham, Mettingham, Shipmeadow, Goldston and Weston. It’s free to enter but you can donate if you’d like to support the museum.

Beccles is a wonderful boating town on the edge of the Broads and this charming old iron bridge offers pretty views of the boats moored up at the quay. Beccles Old Bridge was built in 1884 to replace a stone bridge and to allow wider boats to pass beneath. The bridge itself is nice to look at but if you head onto it and look north you’ll see boats moored up just before the quay. Looking south, more boats line the riverside. The views are complete with the odd weeping willow, tickling the water’s surface.

Great place for a food stop with a shop across the road and benches so you can stop and enjoy the view

Beccles Quay is a charming spot in the historic market town of Beccles. The quay has a long maritime history; boats have arrived in the town at the quay for many centuries. There's a kids play area and plenty of outdoor seating for a picnic at the quay.
