Spofforth held paramount significance as the primary residence of the Percy family, a pivotal and commanding lineage in the northern realms of England, until the concluding era of the 14th century. William de Percy, a cherished figure in the eyes of William the Conqueror, erected a distinguished manor house upon this land during the 11th century. It is said that within these very grounds, insurgent barons convened to draft the historic Magna Carta in the year 1215.

I believe that the bridge is closed for repair until 31 October 2023 so look to take a detour. Komoot has automatically routed me across the golf course to the North which you can get through with your bike (unofficially).

Interesting historical location, but it's not possible to go onto the battlefield

Small fortified manor house.

Spofforth Castle was a fortified Manor House, supposedly where the Magna Carta was written in 1215. The castle was bought by the people of Spofforth in 1985 to ensure that it could continue to be enjoyed by the local community. This means it is free to visit for everyone. A very popular road for local cyclists, with a great view on both sides. If you're coming from Wetherby you'll have climbed to get here so you'll have earned it!

Slippery when wet. I did fall off into the railings.Was a long time ago though so I did survive.

lovely park by the side of the river. theres a cafe. Amusing name for the tiny little park on the other side.

Really flat, smooth route between Wetherby and Spofforth along the old railway track. Mostly part of National Cycle Route 67.

The rickety little Aldwark Bridge is the best place to cross the River Ure by bike and saves a 25 mile detour. Its 40p for cars but free for bikes!

Lovely place to stop, eat and drink

Tittybottle park, formerly Manor Parade Gardens, is the smallest park in Otley. A slim stretch of greenery alongside the river Wharfe, with plenty seating to watch the ducks and boats go by, ideally with some fish and chips. The park got became known as Titttybottle park after its popularity with mother's who would be found seated, feeding their babies.

Interesting toll bridge paved with wooden boards. The sign said it was 40p but the toll collector waved us through on our bikes 🤷‍♂️
