The small and peaceful Kyson Hill is a National Trust owned area of meadowland overlooking the River Deben in Suffolk. It's a great place for a leisurely stroll and quick nature fix.

Sutton Hoo is a fascinating archaeological site with a rich and immense history. It is most well-known for its Anglo-Saxon burial site, including a ship burial dating back to the 7th century. Visitors are free to roam around the site, discovering interesting exhibitions & sites along the way. There is a network of walking trails and a café on site too.

Discovered in the 1930s at Sutton Hoo, the Gar Seat is a replica of an Anglo-Saxon ship burial. This remarkable find unveiled a trove of valuable artefacts and valuable insights into the fascinating era of the Anglo-Saxons. Take a seat and allow yourself to be transported to the past.

Shottisham is a charming village nestled in the heart of Suffolk. The village features a number of picturesque cottages, a beautiful old mill, a church, and is situated nearby to the idyllic River Deben.

On the River Debden, Woodbridge makes a beautiful location for a run. It is best known as being the home of Sutton Hoo, the burial site of an Anglo-Saxon King. He was interred in a ship surrounded by his most valuable possessions.

You can just walk in and watch the building process

The Ship’s Company was formed in 2016 with the sole purpose of creating a permanent and authentic replica of the Anglo-Saxon ship. The team is made up of professionals, volunteers and enthusiasts who are working together to fully understand the dimensions and construction methods. The ship will be built in the newly opened, Longshed, a purpose-built unit gifted to the town and dedicated to the maritime history and education.

Nice little lanes, with a few rises and falls towards the river. Not sure about a picnic but pleasant to ride down.

The footpath that follows the river shoreline from the Mill has plenty of seating areas for a sneaky sandwich or a crafty coffee.

A great base for exploring the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB, Woodbridge is a historic town on the River Deben. There are plenty of places to eat and drink, as well as several accommodation options. The town is well known for Sutton Hoo, home to one of Britain's most important archaeological discoveries: the ship burial of an Anglo-Saxon king and his most valuable possessions.

The River Deben flows 34 miles (54 km) through the heart of Suffolk from Bedingfield to the North Sea. The river has played an important role in the region's history, powering mills. Many animal species call the river home thanks to its varied habitats. Keep a lookout for avocets that overwinter in the area.
