The Passau district of Hals lies on the beautiful Ilz River, right at its impressive bend. Northwest of Hals, an artificial log-driving tunnel was built to shorten the route for timber that would otherwise have to be floated down the long Ilz loop. The detour from Passau is well worth it – pure nature! 🥾🥾

St. Matthew's Parish Church is a significant spiritual center in Passau, uniting a community of approximately 1,800 parishioners from the Old Town, Hacklberg, and Innstadt districts. Its location on the edge of the pedestrian zone at Theresienstraße 12 makes it an accessible place for all seeking spiritual guidance and fellowship. Within the parish boundaries of St. Matthew's, Pastor Stephan Schmoll, who also serves as chaplain at the University Hospital, and Sonja Sibbor-Heißmann, pastor of the Protestant Student Community of Passau, are dedicated to meeting the spiritual needs of the congregation. Together, they offer a variety of worship services, events, and pastoral care programs that appeal to both long-standing and new members. St. Matthew's is thus not only a place of worship but also a vibrant meeting place for encounters, exchange, and support in faith.

The trail runs alongside the Ilz River between Fischhaus and the Oberilzmühle power plant. This section is also known as the Pandurensteig.

St. Matthew's Church stands on the edge of the historic old town. It was built from 1856 to 1859 according to plans by F. Bürklein, his only church building. He was likely inspired by the Gothic style of English country churches and his secular buildings. The altarpiece is by O. Patzig. K. H. 🏛️ The Old Town Hall in Passau – A Stone Testament to Civic Self-Assertion In the heart of the old town, directly on the banks of the Danube, rises the Old Town Hall of Passau – a building that not only impresses architecturally but also tells a turbulent history. Its origins date back to 1298, when the citizens, in a revolt against the Prince-Bishop, fought for their own town hall. A courageous act that still resonates in the symbolism of the building today. The Venetian-style hall, dating from 1405, is particularly striking, its facade adorned with murals depicting Emperor Louis the Bavarian and four standard-bearers. Although these paintings were restored in the 20th century, they preserve the spirit of the old imperial city. The 38-meter-high town hall tower with its daily carillon is another highlight – an acoustic greeting to the city and its guests. Inside, you'll find the magnificent town hall halls, accessible via a Gothic staircase and adorned with Baroque stucco ceilings and monumental paintings by Ferdinand Wagner. Here, history is not only preserved but brought to life – for example, with depictions such as Kriemhild's entry into Passau or the wedding of Emperor Leopold I.
