Great campsite with a kiosk, a beautiful view of Lichtenberg Castle, and a small lake for swimming. The showers and restrooms are clean. There's even a hairdryer, something I haven't seen at any campsite before. The food is delicious. They don't typically rent out for one night, but they reserved a spot for us after an email request.

The former school in Lichtenberg is a typical school building from around 1900. The building stands on a massive base and has large arched windows; adjacent to this is a stair tower made of quarry stone and made of granite with sandstone surrounds.

From here, donkeys transported the water in barrels to the castle and the castle settlement. This is where the name comes from.

The most impressive and picturesque view of the Renaissance castle can be seen from the Bollwerkshügel, about 400 meters from Lichtberg Castle. It was built between 1570 and 1581 by master builder Jakob Kesselhut on behalf of the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt, Georg I. As it was used less and less by subsequent generations, the 16th century structure was preserved. For hikers, the castle is a striking landmark that can be easily seen from many places. Here, from the Bollwerkshügel, it is almost within reach across the valley.

The bulwark is a late medieval battery tower in the southern Hesse community of Fischbachtal, in the OT Lichtenberg and is a listed building. The regional population also calls the bulwark Kraut-Bütt (herb barrel). The bulwark is currently only accessible as part of guided tours by the Geopark on-site guides Fischbachtal and offers a good view of Lichtenberg, the castle and the Fischbachtal from its upper platform.
