Nendrum Monastery was a Christian monastery founded in the 5th century. The monastery finished somewhere between 974 and 1178, but the church survived until the 15th century. You can visit the ruins if you're riding past.

Sketrick Castkle is a historic landmark situated on Sketrick Island near Whiterock. The castle dates back to the 12th century and the grounds are free to explore.

Comber Greenway is a popular traffic-free footway and cycling path connecting Belfast city centre with Comber. It's the perfect place to get some fresh air and relieve yourself from the hustle and bustle of city life. I was attracted by this absolutely magical looking meadow, which is part of every filming location Scout for J.R.R. Tolkien's films would certainly have been worth a second look. At the top of the hill you can see the remains of a monastery from the 6th century marvel. Nendrum Abbey is considered one of the nuclei of Christianity in Ireland. At that time, however, this place was also a magnet for craftsmen, simply because there was work there. Gradually, more people settled and a small center developed at the monastery. However, this thriving place not only attracted honorable fellows, there are some indications that raids by predatory Vikings also took place as a result. In the 15th century the site was then replaced by a more accessible site on the mainland and Nendrum was abandoned and left to decay.
