By Liz Lemon. Inspired by the geological and industrial history of the site, home of both prehistoric fossils and, in more recent times, the Markham Engineering Works, a work that fuses organic and mechanical forms. Known locally as ‘The Snail’, the sculpture’s spiralling form simultaneously echoes the casings of the huge water-turbines once made at the Markham works and the tiny, fossilised creatures found in local coal measures. At night, internal, pulsating blue and green fibre-optic lights glow through the ‘portholes’, reflecting and enlivening the sculpture’s metallic surface. The sculpture’s relation to its site is further emphasised by inscriptions in the base replicating former Markham employees’ signatures.

The River Hipper is a tributary of the River Rother in Derbyshire, England. Its source is a large expanse of wetlands, fed by the surrounding moors between Chatsworth and Chesterfield, known as the Hipper Sick on Beeley Moor, which is part of the Chatsworth Estate. It then passes through Holymoorside and down into Chesterfield, just south of the town centre, before flowing into the River Rother. In July 2007, parts of Chesterfield flooded when the River Hipper burst its banks during a substantial storm that caused extensive flooding in North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire. The river burst its banks again after torrential rain in October 2023. The surrounding landscape is known as the Hipper Valley.

By Melanie Jackson. The design celebrates Chesterfield's strong industrial heritage, whilst also looking forward, towards the town's future growth and development. A large weathering steel, spoked feature (representing a 'wheel' or 'cog') appears to grow out of the landscape, symbolising industry, the spokes twist upwards at the centre to form an opening flower – representing the town's growth and future, which is yet to unfold. The design of the 'flower' is influenced by the flower of the pomegranate tree, which features on the town's coat of arms. The eight petals relate to the eight twisting facets of the town's famous spire and also represent the eight community areas that make up Chesterfield. Eight sculptural dry-stone walls radiate out from the roots of the artwork, blending the sculpture with its setting.

A number of slats were missing. I wouldn't advise using it in the dark. 😅
