I picked up a 12" mid-ride but really struggled to fit it in a jersey pocket along with the bottle of wine.

A quiet alternative to the busier A137 between Ardleigh and Lawford, although the twisty and narrow road and the need to give way if you meet any oncoming vehicles mean it's considerably slower. Ok if you're just one or two riders but if you're in a group you're better sticking to the main road.

Great views of...a random village street. There's a nice enough looking village pub I suppose.

Not something you're going to go up with road cleats on but the coffee van at the foot of the tower has plenty of tables if you're there on a fine day.

The kiosk is cash-only so you need to be carrying your emergency tenner if you want to stop here.

With outdoor tables overlooking the Harwich sea front as well as indoor seating. Great spot to enjoy the view over a coffee and cake. Open til 4pm weekdays, 5pm weekends.

Rolling road that offers great views eastwards across the marsh flats and channels around the Naze.

there's c. 400m of gravel leading up to the vineyard, I'd hike that bit in and out if riding road bike.

Panoramic view down the Shotley Peninsula towards the mouth of the Stour with the ports of Harwich and Felixstowe in view.

Nice little town with a scenic location at the top of the Stour estuary and a pretty, historic high street with several cafes as well as a Tesco convenience store.

Nice flat, peaceful riverside route between Manningtree and Mistley Towers (the only remaining parts of a demolished church).

Great view across the estuary of the impressive cranes lining Felixstowe Docks as you head south towards Shotley Gate.

Multiple cafes all face each other across this little crossroads in the middle of the high street, so take your pick! Cafe Rio has nice outdoor seating right on the corner but watch out if you go indoors as their laminate flooring is like ice with road cleats!

Watch for horse droppings on the road, and range rovers

A striking tower sticking out of the East Anglian coast. Worth a visit just to have a look at the structure, but there is also a viewing platform, tea room and exhibitions through the summer. The approach to the tower can be visited all year long, but the tower itself if only open from 1st April to 31st Oct.
