Reaching the summit of Slieve Donard feels like stepping into a small, timeless world. Slieve Commedagh, at 767 meters, is the second-highest peak in the Mourne Mountains and a rewarding climb for any hiker. Its summit offers sweeping views across the Mournes and out to the Irish Sea, a reminder of how close these mountains sit to the coast. The ascent is steep and demanding, often over pathless ground, but never overly technical in good weather. You can climb it on its own or link it with nearby peaks such as Slieve Donard, making for a truly memorable day in the heart of the Mournes.

On the summit of Slieve Meelmore stands a small stone shelter, a welcome spot to rest after the steady climb up. From here, the views stretch across the Mournes, with Slieve Bearnagh’s rocky tors dominating the skyline. The shelter gives hikers a place to pause, shielded from the wind, and enjoy the sweeping mountain scenery before continuing along the Mourne Wall.

Chimney Rock Mountain is an enjoyable, and relatively strenuous hike, located in the eastern Mournes. The peak comes in at number 9 in the top 10 peaks by height, and provides some wonderful views of the neighbouring mountains, including Donard and Commedagh, the two tallest of the Mourne peaks, and out to the expansive Irish Sea, too.

Slieve Commedagh is the second-highest mountain in NI at 767m. With spectacular views across Newcastle and over the rest of the Northern Mournes, it is well worth the climb. To reach the peak, head slightly north-east from this point and travel a few hundreds metres.

Slieve Commedagh holds the impressive title of being the second-highest peak in the entire Mournes Mountain range. The peak commands excellent views of Donard Forest and the Newcastle coast to the North East and the inner Mournes to the rear.

Cove Mountain is one of the summits in the heart of the Mourne Mountains, in the land enclosed by the great Mourne Wall. It stands proud above the northern shore of Ben Crom Reservoir and can be hiked along with Slieve Lamagan to the southwest and Slieve Beg to the northeast. It's position towards the centre of the range gives it a beautiful panorama.

The Mourne Wall leads to the summit and there, like Slieve Donard, is a tower probably built to give some shelter to the workmen who constructed the wall. Meelmore also has what appears to be an old stonemasons hut at J302285 with plenty of part cut stone on its periphery showing that Meelmore was likely another spot that materials were gathered for the Mourne Wall.
