The 800-hectare "Kasten" forest area around the forester's lodge of the same name forms an important part of Munich's green belt. The site has been owned by the Heilig-Geist-Spital Munich and the associated foundation since 1308 and thus for more than 800 years. It is administered by the municipal department of the state capital. The history of the forester's house as an inn and beer garden goes back to 1899, when snacks were initially sold to hikers. Today, a spacious beer garden resides here along with an equally huge parking lot, children's playground, musicians' stage and everything that goes with it. Incidentally, the name "Kasten" presumably derives from a former Roman fort, which is said to have existed near the nearby Via Julia. https://www.forst-kasten.de/

The beer garden is great because of its location and because it offers great opportunities, especially for families with small children (children can play in the playground and in the surrounding area while you enjoy your beer). Adults can also take a ball or Fris-bee and exercise to promote digestion. Unfortunately, the quality of the food was underwhelming during our visit.
