Stour river was flooded, so we had to make a detour towards the end.

Full of history and character, Lavenham just calls out to be explored. It is a wonderfully well preserved medieval village and in its heyday was once of the 20 most wealthiest in the country. Evidence of this is clear throughout the village. There are lots of places to stop to eat and drink or to stay if you are looking for a few days away in Suffolk.

One of England's finest medieval towns. It is noted for its splendid 15th Century timber framed Guildhall. There is also good selection of cafes available, to pick up some refreshments

The 16th-century Kentwell Hall is a stately home in Long Melford and one of the finest moated Tudor Houses in the country. Surrounded by beautiful parkland and gardens, it's a wonderful sight to behold. The hall has been used many times for film and television and also hosts weddings, historical re-enactments and other events. It’s open to the public all year round, though you’ll need to buy a ticket to enter.

The cathedral-esque Holy Trinity Church in Long Melford is a sight to behold. Grade I-listed, it was funded by the region's prosperous wool trade and built between 1467 and 1497 in the late Perpendicular Gothic style. Thought by many to be one of the finest religious buildings in the country, a visit is a must when hiking in the area.

Cavendish is one of those achingly picturesque English villages, with a traditional green and quaint thatched cottages. There is a trio of pubs in the village centre where you can find a meal and a bed for the night. The Stour Valley Path passes through the village, as it follows the River Stour from source to sea.

The small Suffolk town of Clare is a delight to explore. It boasts independent shops, pubs, cafes, an historic Augustine priory and an 11th-century castle ruin, the centrepiece of Clare Castle Country Park. A hike up to the 60-foot (18 m) high castle motte rewards with great views across the town.

Clare Castle Country Park is a beautiful place to explore. Top billing goes to its Norman Castle and the 60-foot (18 m) motte, which you can ascend for lovely views of the small town. The disused Stour Valley Railway station houses a charming cafe, while the wildlife-rich River Stour flows by.

The descent from the market square outside the guildhall down scenic Prentice Street is steep, fast and great fun but ends at a T-junction so be ready to brake hard!
