The Gaißacher Filze belong to the Natura 2000 area "Attenloher Filze und Mariensteiner Moore" and are among the outstanding moor complexes in the pre-Alpine moor and hill country. Today's landscape was created during the last ice ages. Due to the abundance of water and the accumulation of water, a large variety of moors and other habitats formed. The extensive and closely interlinked complexes of raised and transitional moors, calcareous fens, moor grass meadows and moor forests are particularly special. In addition to the large and small Gaißach, there are also smaller, near-natural streams and alluvial forests in the area. There are still occurrences of rare meadow breeders in the area, such as the disturbance-sensitive meadow pipit, which is threatened with extinction throughout Bavaria. Also noteworthy are the large populations of the rare scabious fritillary, which benefits from the traditional use of litter meadows.
