Nice and easy route to cycle. Not much traffic. enough to explore.

Lemons Hill Bridge carries the road across the northern end of Alton water reservoir. It links the two parts of Tattingstone village.

Whilst people have been worshipping on this spot for over 1,000 years, this beautiful church was originally built somewhere around 1350, nearly 700 years ago. It was originally designed with a tower in mind, but it was never completed. Legend says that every time the builders stopped for the night, the devil tore it down. Whatever happened, the five bells, considered the heaviest in England, are now housed in a bell cage and still rung before each service.

The best view of the upper part of Alton Water. A wide, fast descent to the bridge from either direction with a short climb out.

Panoramic view down the Shotley Peninsula towards the mouth of the Stour with the ports of Harwich and Felixstowe in view.

The lowest crossing on the River Stour, next to the tidal sluices separating the river from the estuary, and also the border between Essex and Suffolk. Originally the site of a timber bridge which was bleached white by the salt.

The park includes a cafe with bike stands and outdoor seating overlooking the river, open 9-4 every day.

Actually probably one of the ugliest villages in a famously picturesque area: dominated by an estate of very un-scenic modern houses. About the best thing you could say is it's better than the A12.

It looks like you’re riding through a period village but it’s actually all part of the grounds and buildings of a boarding school connected with the Royal Navy. Impressive Queen Anne-style architecture.

Lemons Hill Bridge crosses Alton Water and links the two parts of Tattingstone which were split when the reservoir was created. A great number of buildings were lost. In the north is the village pub, the White Horse, a lovely place to stop, while in the south is an 18th century workhouse and the parish church. If you are running through the village keep an eye out for the red phone box which is home to a collection of audio recordings of people who were impacted by the flooding of the area to make way for Alton Water.

St, Mary the Virgin Church is unusual for a number of reasons - firstly there is a foundation, but no tower. In this case not because it collapsed, but because it never got built, falling foul of the reformation, the wealth of the parish was appropriated to the Crown, and East Bergholt's tower never got built. Another unusual site is the bell cage - built as a temporary structure in 1531, it has withstood the test of time and it houses the heaviest peal of 5 in the world.

If you fancy taking to the water, Constable Park offers a variety of activities including SUP, kayak and Canadian canoe all available to hire, and you don't have to pre-book. There is also a coffee house on-site.

The largest manmade reservoir in Suffolk, Alton Water is a tranquil place to whittle away some time on a bike Tour. It took over 13 years to construct the reservoir, opening in 1987. The waters' surface area measures a whopping 400 acres (160 ha) – plenty big enough to enjoy various watersports!

Pretty village, quiet roads. Great alternative to A12 cycle path (which is noisy, rough and overgrown in places, not for road cycling).
