River crossing on the north eastern edge of Knettishal Heath

An unusual geographical feature where the stream at the bottom of this steep-sided ‘hollow’ has eroded the soft chalky ground. An enjoyable section of this route at any time of year.

This was the original route from Stanton to Bury St Edmunds. The wooded parts are home to thousands of Bluebells in late spring.

A poignant reminder of war. This makeshift memorial marks the site of a crashed Wellington in 1942. Further information is available online.

This area has mostly clay soil so can be sticky after we weather

Lots of different types of terrain to learn, pay attention to some of the forest turns not all are obvious, few lift your bike over log sections, one built for short people section but fun, watch your head;-). Beware of a couple of very bust main road crossings!!! This time of year give yourself time, lights and toes and fingers need warmth. Shout out to 'Wolf Way' for the route;-)

The Pumphouse Route is one of several excellent trails that wind through the West Stow Country Park and Lackford Lakes. The route passes by the Pumphouse, a Grade II listed building that once served as a sewage works during the early to mid-20th century.

The grundle becomes a running stream after wet weather but this can normally be navigated by crossing it and taking the upper path which has short steeper sections

Grundle, Grindle, or Grendel? This amazing holloway near Stanton, is believed to be the lair of Grendel, the evil beasty of the Beowolf epic, written in Anglo Saxon times when the Wolf Kings ruled East Anglia. Its definitely a gateway to another world, sunk deep into the chalk, with steep sides and tree cover it does not feel like East Anglia at all. Great in Summer, river-like in Winter, but passable, with care.

West Stow is more than just an outdoor museum; it's also an archaeological site, as it occupies the location of one of the earliest Anglo-Saxon villages, which was inhabited between 420 and 650 AD. Currently, there is a recreation of this village where you can engage in a variety of fun and interesting activities.

There is a bridge here over the water so you can continue along Peddars Way. There is also access to the river (easier to access from the Knettishall side). It is a great and safe place to let your dogs into the river for a play. We take our dogs here for their first paddle

Great stop off if you are riding with children, play in the park, visit the Anglo Saxon village or stop for some lunch.

Watch out for the cattle grids at each end of the heath road, they really rattle you if you hit them at speed!

Knettishall Heath nature reserve covers about 430 acres (174 hectares) and also includes woodland and riverside meadows, as well as large areas of heath. In season, there is a visitor welcome and cafe van in the car park every Wed-Sun plus bank holidays 10am-4pm. If you go early in the morning, you're likely to find the ponies grazing much closer to the road.
