All the cafés and inns are good - though special mention to Bridge House (opposite car park near church) for "proper good food", a really nice welcome, and being able to store bikes inside (just ask) - hot choc is amazing!

The Exmoor National Park Authority has four visitor centres and this is the Dulverton branch. Often housing exhibitions of heritage and art, there's plenty of information available here. Once an part of the Pixton Park drive, New Bridge is far from new. Built in the early 1800s, this gorgeous bridge is made from local slate stone and spans the River Barle. Today, it sits under vibrant trees and is partially covered in ivy. Its position and age gives it a bit of a mystical air and it's a genuine joy to come across on walks in the area.

This village is a place of meetings. The confluence of the Rivers Barle and Exe is here and the border of Devon and Somerset is spanned by the old stone bridge. A stony bank makes photographing the bridge a fairly easy feat unless the river is particularly high, and you can rest at the Anchor Inn. There are plenty of walking trails to explore from Exebridge, including the Exe Valley Way.

This old wool town lies just south of Exmoor National Park and is a lovely place to stop for a bite to eat. Dating back 1,000 years at least, Bampton retains a distinct air of community and serenity. The town is a conservation area and has more listed buildings than you can shake a stick at. Hike up to the motte and bailey castle for lovely views over the town.

Built in 1791, this old stone bridge is pretty to look at by itself. It's made even more special, however, for its neighbouring house, Cove Cottage. Looking like it's wandered out of a Tolkien novel, this thatched cottage couldn't be more charming if it tried. At the time of writing, it's operated as an Airbnb so you can even stay here and roam the beautiful riverside as much as you like.
