The Lichtenburg, a castle ruin, was built in the 12th century and expanded and rebuilt several times over the centuries. Destroyed in the Peasants' War in the 16th century, it was then rebuilt, but lost its importance in the 18th century and slowly fell into disrepair. Its keep is well preserved and offers an impressive view of the Rhön, the Grabfeld and the Thuringian Forest.

The Ostheim waterworks is a listed building. It was built in 1910-1911 as part of the renovation of Ostheim's water supply and served as the entrance to the old elevated tank. The castle-like facade was modeled on the Ostheim city coat of arms.

The Lichtenburg is Ostheim's landmark and was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. It is very well signposted as the destination of several hiking trails. From the well-preserved castle tower you have a fantastic view of the Rhön, the Grabfeld and the Thuringian Forest. Below the keep is the mighty main gate. Festivals, concerts and other events create a range of leisure activities that keep the Lichtenburg alive. In addition, the financial gain is used to keep the castle in good condition.

The hiker's car park is on Burgstrasse in Ostheim. Here, a large playground and other parking spaces invite you to linger. The car park is also the starting point for the extra tour "Der Ostheimer", which shows the diversity of the Rhön natural and cultural landscape over a length of almost 7 km.
