The tower was built in 1476 from the remains of the old ducal castle. It served as the outer fortification of the city. The name is probably derived from the residential area of the knife grinders or from its origin, the grinding of the old castle. In 1931, the war memorial was housed in the tower.

The Hall of Liberation is a memorial on the Michelsberg in the Bavarian town of Kelheim. It can be seen from afar and was built between 1842 and 1863 by King Ludwig I of Bavaria by the architects Friedrich von Gärtner and Leo von Klenze.

As an alternative, there is also a smaller boat directly from Weltenburg Monastery, close to the rocks in the Danube Gorge to the end of the Danube Gorge (from there about 3km back to Kehlheim).

In 1548, the city built its town hall in a prominent location at the middle of the street intersection. After its demolition in 1824, the town clerk's office became the town hall, which is now called the "Old Town Hall." This building was constructed in 1598 and renovated in the 17th century.
