The Giant's Causeway consists of approximately 40,000 regularly shaped basalt columns due to a volcanic eruption. The pillars were formed 60 million years ago when lava erupted from a volcano, pouring across the landscape and rupturing as it cooled. • Legend: This stone formation got its name from an old legend, which says that the Irish warrior Finn McCool built a gateway to the Scottish mainland to challenge his enemy Benandonner to a duel. Benandonner, on his way back from Ireland, destroyed the stone formation, leaving only the formation that still exists today in Northern Ireland and the Scottish island of Staffa . The pillars were formed 60 million years ago when lava erupted from a volcano, pouring across the landscape and rupturing as it cooled.
