The French term "casemate" describes massive vaults within fortifications. Casemates were usually hidden inside ramparts and consisted of masonry walls or earthen mounds. They were intended to protect against artillery attacks and, in turn, allowed the installation of heavy guns. Such casemates with guns are also found in the high rampart wall of Hohenneuffen.

A great hiking path and MTB trail leads from the rock down into the valley to the sand pit and the Beuren open-air museum. The trail with its bends is easy to navigate on an MTB even for advanced beginners with concentration, will and courage.
