A Baroque Pilgrimage Chapel The Beiswang Chapel was built in 1680 by Georg Streb, a farmer in Beiswang, and his wife, Anna Maria Mayerlin. This Baroque pilgrimage chapel, steeped in legend, is dedicated to the Nativity of Mary. The chapel housed two carved wooden images of grace: the "Sorrowful Mother of God with the body of her son on her lap" (Pietà) and "Our Lady of Beiswang with the Christ Child in her arms." These were stolen in 1977 and 1979, respectively. The statues date back to the 15th century and suggest that the chapel had a predecessor, which was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War and may have been surrounded by several farmsteads. To the west of the chapel stood the sexton's house, which was demolished in 1825. The Beiswang Festival takes place annually on the Sunday after the Nativity of Mary (September 8).
