Psalm 26:8 The church of Nufringen was not built in its current size from the beginning, but was expanded and rebuilt several times. It was originally built as a chapel around 1150, as a branch of Kuppingen. The first expansion of the Romanesque chapel took place in the High Gothic period, at the end of the 13th and beginning of the 14th century. The choir, which still exists today, was added to the east wall. It was finished off with three sides of an octagon. The ceiling consists of a cross vault. Looking up leads to two keystones: the Christmas rose and the Lamb of God. Strangely, the 5 windows of the choir are all different heights. Nufringen became an independent parish at the end of the 15th century. The congregation had grown again, and the church had to be expanded again. The south and west walls of the nave were demolished. The south wall was moved outwards by around 2 m, the west wall probably by around 6 m. The church gained considerable space. The west wall was given a late Gothic portal, above which was a decorative round window. The small side chapel between the tower and the sacristy was built along with this extension. The tower is probably the oldest part of the building. Like the original chapel, it dates from around 1150 and was built as a defensive tower. The upper part was added in half-timbered construction during the first extension (around 1400). The bells initially hung in the upper solid floor. The sound was transmitted over the town through the artfully crafted round-arched windows. The bells have now hung in the upper part of the tower for centuries, the oldest since 1506. When the extended church space was no longer sufficient, a gallery was built on the west side (around 1750). Two entrances, on the north and south sides, led to this men's gallery.
