11월 13, 2025, The Ridgeway at Uffington White Horse

Great views down the valley and Uffington white horse (white horse hill). Too wet to take proper photos alas. You will have a better experience on a clear day, I hope.

Uffington White Horse, Hill Fort & Dragon Hill – Ridgeway Detour Worth Every Calorie. If you’re bikepacking the Ridgeway or King Alfred’s Way, don’t just roll past this spot. Reserve a few calories and at least an hour — this area packs in some of the most iconic and mysterious landmarks in the region. 🟠 The Uffington White Horse – A 3,000-year-old chalk figure carved into the hillside. It’s Britain’s oldest hill figure and only fully visible from the air, but still incredible from the trail. 🟠 Uffington Castle (Hill Fort) – An Iron Age hill fort with wide open views and perfect spots to sit, snack, or take in the history. 🟠 Dragon Hill – A small, flat-topped mound tied to ancient legend. Folklore says this is where St George slew the dragon, and the bare patch where no grass grows is said to be stained with the dragon’s blood. A mix of archaeology, scenery, and myth — and it’s all just a short detour from the Ridgeway. Totally worth the time, especially if you catch it at sunset. 🎥 Short on time but carrying a drone? Put it up here and explore from the air — it’s the best way to take in the scale of the horse and the surrounding landscape. ✅ Ideal lunch or golden hour stop ✅ Historic and photogenic ✅ Good for walking the bike and soaking it all in 📍 Located near Uffington, Oxfordshire

If you're hiking near Uffington Castle Hillfort, take a moment to explore the surrounding landscape. The views from the top are incredible, and you're right next to the famous Uffington White Horse. It's a great spot for a break and some amazing photos! Atention - no drones allowed.

Open all day and night. A very intriguing place. I sat for around half an hour one morning, had some breakfast and moved on. didn't see anybody else. found it very peaceful. unbelievable just how old it actually is.

Not much to see, but it great to walk along the ramparts and imagine what it would have looked like inside the area you're walking around.

6월 3, 2024, Ashdown House

Ashdown House (also known as Ashdown Park) is a 17th-century country house in the civil parish of Ashbury in the English county of Oxfordshire. Until 1974 the house was in the county of Berkshire, and the nearby village of Lambourn remains in that county. The house is now owned by the national trust, with the lower floors of house rented by The Who guitarist Pete Townsend. Entry to the house is by booked tour only, at 2pm, 3pm and 4pm Wednesdays and Saturdays 3 April - 26 October.

Alfred's Castle is a small Iron Age hill fort, situated behind Ashdown House in the civil parish of Ashbury in Oxfordshire (formerly Berkshire). It lies 2–3 km south of the Ridgeway and is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It has a large enclosure attached that shows as a cropmark. Excavation has shown this to be contemporary with the small enclosure, started in the 6th century BC. The hill fort was established within a series of late Bronze Age linear ditches and revealed much evidence for occupation within it. In the late 1st century, a Romano-British farmhouse was built within the abandoned prehistoric enclosure. King Alfred won a great victory against the Danes at the Battle of Ashdown, in AD 871. Being located just to the west of Ashdown House, Victorian antiquaries associated Alfred's Castle with the King's troop movements before the battle. The exact site of Alfred's battle has not yet been determined, however, so is a matter for debate. The most likely sites are near Compton and Aldworth in Berkshire. Excavations were carried out at Alfred's Castle from 1998 to 2000 by archaeologists from Oxford University. A final analysis was published in 2014.

Uffington Castle is an early Iron Age (with underlying Bronze Age) univallate hillfort in Oxfordshire, England. It covers about 32,000 square metres and is surrounded by two earth banks separated by a ditch with an entrance in the western end. A second entrance in the eastern end was apparently blocked up a few centuries after it was built. The original defensive ditch was V-shaped with a small box rampart in front and a larger one behind it. Timber posts stood on the ramparts. Later the ditch was deepened and the extra material dumped on top of the ramparts to increase their size. A parapet wall of sarsen stones lined the top of the innermost rampart. Excavations have indicated that it was probably built in the 7th or 8th century BC and continued to be occupied throughout the Iron Age. Isolated postholes were found inside the fort but no evidence of buildings. Pottery, loom weights and animal bone finds suggest some form of occupation however. The most activity appears to have been during the Roman period as the artefacts recovered from the upper fills of the ditch attest. The ramparts were remodelled to provide more entrances, and a shrine seems to have been built in the early 4th century AD. Two oblong mounds, one containing 46 Romano-British burials and one containing eight Saxon burials, lie nearby. An ancient track passes by the northern entrance to the hillfort; it is known as The Ridgeway. It links to the Icknield Way at the Goring Gap, and passes close to Avebury before heading south across Salisbury Plain. It also passes very close to a Neolithic chambered long barrow, Waylands Smithy, about a mile to the west.
