The Baroque pilgrimage church of Stadl-Paura rises on a hill near the right bank of the Traun River and was built between 1714 and 1724 by Johann Michael Prunner and Francesco Messenta. An earlier chapel dedicated to St. Blaise stood on the same site and was already mentioned in the early Middle Ages. The Trinity Church is considered Johann Michael Prunner's masterpiece. It is a creation of the highest perfection, both architecturally and theologically. Of particular note is that it was planned and constructed as a symbolic building with many allusions to the Holy Trinity. Francesco Borromini was an artistic role model for many architects of the time, including Johann Michael Prunner. Recognizable Borromini influences include the sweeping and receding exterior walls and towers, and the interior floor plan with the semicircular altar niches (in the towers), which respond to the circular central space. And the indirect light that streams in from above and from the sides, illuminating the altarpieces and the small fresco in the lantern. The wall openings behind the altars, the use of indirect light, and the church furnishings are all the work of Francesco Messenta in his role as interior designer.

The parish and pilgrimage church is located on the eastern part of a hill that was formerly called Paura (the municipality of Stadl-Paura has only existed since 1873), which is why it is often referred to as the “Paura Church”. The place name can either be traced back to the Old High German word “bur” for “house” or “estate”, or perhaps also to the Vulgar Latin expression “pavura”, which means something like “holy shyness” of the place. According to legend, Abbot Maximilian Pagl of Lambach Abbey vowed to have a church built if the plague passed Lambach. Since the plague had spared Lambach and was considered to have died out in nearby Wels on Christmas Day 1713, the abbot asked the episcopal ordinariate in Passau for permission to build the chapel in a letter dated January 2, 1714, in order to keep his promise. It was granted on January 14th and the project could begin. After the foundation was dug, Pagl had a cross erected on June 11, 1714 at the site of the first altar. The following day the first stone of this altar was consecrated, which was placed by the builder of the church, Johann Michael Prunner. On March 4, 1715, Prunner signed the contract, which was preserved in the monastery archives. The exact start of construction is not known, but by October 1715 the construction had progressed so far that the master carpenter Friedrich Kruel was able to start putting on the roof structure on October 14th. The building of the three towers was completed on October 2, 1716, and buttons, crosses and pyramids were placed on the towers from May to October 1717. On October 16th, the masons finished “cleaning” the outside of the church. The shell was completed on October 30th (according to the monastery archives). The monastery archives have contracts for the supply of marble stones for the church floor from 1718. It wasn't laid until four years later. On July 31, 1719, the painters Carlo Carlone and Francesco Messenta began fresco painting in the lantern and dome, which they finished in July 1720. In October 1721 the portal to the Traun was finished. On June 11, 1722, the construction of the church had progressed to such an extent that disarmament could begin. A little later, Francesco Messenta began painting architectural altars. Johann Ignatius Egedacher from Passau installed the three organs in the spring of 1723. Josef Matthias Götz created the sculptural work on the three altars. He put up the figures for the God the Father altar in 1724, and the first of the four bells was hung on June 2nd of the same year. On June 10th, Abbot Maximilian Pagl consecrated the God the Father altar and the following day, Trinity Sunday, held a high mass for the first time in the newly built church (according to monastery archives). In October 1724, Abbot Maximilian Pagl began to be ill and died on February 23, 1725. He was no longer able to see the church completed; it was reserved for his three successors (Wikipedia).

This church is a unique architectural and artistic representation of belief in the One and Trinity God. It was commissioned by Lambach Abbot Maximilian Pagl in the 18th century and designed by Johann Michael Prunner. The church has a circular plan with an inscribed equilateral triangle symbolizing the three persons of the Trinity. Each side of the triangle has an entrance, an organ, and an altar dedicated respectively to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The church is richly decorated with frescoes, stucco, sculpture and gilding created by renowned artists such as Carlo Innocenzo Carloni, Martino Altomonte, Joseph Matthias Götz and others. The church is located in the market town of Lambach in Upper Austria, which is also known for its Benedictine monastery. The church is a popular pilgrimage destination and an outstanding example of Baroque sacred art in Austria.
