Great on a dry day

I deliberately returned to this route having missed it the day before on a more ambitious circular route (which would have made it a decent). The following day I attempted to climb it with the river on the left. Whilst the start is interesting enough, the track quickly degrades to a boulder field which I'd class as un-ridable by any standards. It gets worse with any semblance of a track being reduced to looking for horse droppings! I scouted the area on foot, which itself wasn't easy, in search of a way through but finally had to accept defeat. My warning therefore is to ONLY attempt this as a descent (as Simon did) since I suspect the route might be clearer in the opposite direction - and also allow plenty of time. As a footnote, if climbing, then it's easy to find yourself on a much steeper track to the right, which oddly enough is just about climbable and fun to descend (don't think it goes anywhere though)

It's a tap installed outside a wooden shed of the electrical department and as close as you can get to a public fountain. Push the wooden lever hard to start the water flow, and enjoy.

At 564 metres (1,850 ft), Okement Hill is one of the higher points you can easily access on Northern Dartmoor. The MOD trails around this area allow good access to some of the higher rocky tors. Enjoy the amazing views northwest towards Yes Tor, southeast towards Hangingstone Hill and in all other directions across the moor.

A beautiful section of route 27 Granite Way where the trail opens up as you pass across the Meldon Viaduct. Views across show the undulating hills of the highest area within Dartmoor National park where High Willhays and Yes Tor are situated.

Shortly after crossing the bridge, we had to return. There is a public footpath, but it's only accessible via a wooden construction with two steep steps. We were walking with our two 80 pounds dogs; the steps are not accessible for dogs and we could only have continued if we had lifted them both above this whatever-it-is-called thingy.

A rocky, paved ford which passes through the East Okement River and the Black-a-ven Brook.

At 564 m Okement Hill is one of the higher points you can easily and legally ride to on northern Dartmoor. The MOD trails around this area are great fun to ride around and allow bike access to some of the higher rocky Tors. Amazing views northwest towards Yes Tor, southeast towards Hangingstone Hill and in all other directions across the moor.

This is quite a hard single track through some overgrown bushes (in the summer) with hidden rocks, theres a nice river to the right of the track, the gate at the top that needs to be used is the left gate, you get shouted at for trying to use the right gate lol

Longtimber Tor is a small tor nestled next to the River Tavy and hidden amongst a jungle of greens and shrubbery. If you do manage to scramble amongst the bushes and brambles, you will be rewarded with a nice little view over to Smeardon Down & Boulters Tor - it's not a life-changing view like some of the others in the park, but at least it's another ticked off the list!

A wooden bridge spans over the River Tay creating a picturesque setting. There are scattered stones and pebbles on the riverbanks, and a little seat too, which make the perfect spot to sit down and have a picnic and a cuppa.

Take the ford or the bridge, depending on how dry you want your feet to stay. This is an old military road so the ford was once used by gun carriages. You can see the remnants of the paving on either side of the water. It also makes a lovely wild swimming spot if you are looking to combine both running and dipping.

The Langstone stands high at nearly 3m tall and although once removed from its positioned here on Langstone Moor, it was replaced in its original location in 1893. If you look closely at the stone you'll notice some circular holes, wounds from when it was used for target practice by American soldiers stationed here in the Second World War.

Legend tells of a couple out walking on the moor who encountered the local Pixies (Piskies) who brought down a mist to prevent them from finding their way. After much walking around in circles, the couple found a well and partook of the waters. This instantly broke the Piskies' spell, and they could make their way down to Okehampton. In gratitude, the couple erected a cross by the well, so that anyone could find it, take the water and dispel the Piskies' spells. The well itself is now covered in granite slabs, but the cross is still there.

Fantastic cosy pub in the heart of Belstone serving food and drinks from the bar as well as the outside shed in the summer months. The most wonderful views over the moorland from the outside picnic benches.

Stunning views, great for families or as part of a long ride

One of two viaducts on the Granite Way, Lake Viaduct is an impressive granite span with nine arches. Built for the now-closed railway reaching from Plymouth to Okehampton, the viaduct was built in the late 1800s. Today, the railway is gone and the viaduct resurfaced, forming a foot and cycle path on the Granite Way and the Dartmoor Way. It’s a wonderful place to stop, with benches at intervals and views east to the rugged moor and west to flatter, patchwork landscapes.

Great riding and views. Easy access from the Granite Way cycle route. Best to ride in good weather as it's very exposed. lots of trails to explore close by
