Radio interferometry started in the mid-1940s on the outskirts of Cambridge, but with funding from the Science Research Council and a corporate donation of £100,000 from Mullard Limited, a leading commercial manufacturer of thermionic valves. Construction of the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory commenced at Lords Bridge Air Ammunition Park,[1] a few kilometres to the west of Cambridge. The observatory was founded under Martin Ryle of the Radio-Astronomy Group of the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge and was opened by Sir Edward Victor Appleton on 25 July 1957. Pleasant if unexceptional little village. There's a pub but no cafe or shop.

You’ll find similar memorials in pretty much every town & village in Britain.

Unfortunately it’s only a fairly short stretch - a couple of km - that has the smooth new tarmac but the rest of the surface between Eyeworth and Ashwell isn’t too bad compared to many.

Not as steep as Croydon Hill...but nearer to Cambridge! It does touch just over 10% from both sides but for longer from the Haslingfield side.

Great place to dip your feet after the ride!

More fun from the Haslingfield side as you don't need to brake on the descent. Also, The Royal Oak in Barrington is decent. Is this steeper than Croydon hill though?

A great secluded stop for refs, a short walk from village bakery

A very beautiful and quite lane running next to a bluebell covered woods in April & May

Wide road and good tarmac with a short but testing gradient from Potton, more gradual from Wrestlingworth, rewarded with panoramic views across miles of country.

The radio telescopes are on the track bed of the old Oxford to Cambridge railway line.

The Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory (MRAO) is home to some of the largest and most advanced radio telescopes in the world.
