Edwardian country home of playwright, politician and philosopher George Bernard Shaw, with Arts and Crafts features and collection and a Tranquil garden with rolling lawns, vibrant summer borders, a fruit orchard and Shaw’s iconic rotating writing hut. Plenty of bluebells. Don't forget there is still some traffic here, so its safer to walk your bike a bit into the woods and only then show off your photography skills.

The Bright Star is an excellent pub with garden to sit out. Check it is open as not open on Monday and Tuesdays.

After heavy rain the area under the bridge sometimes floods

When there is heavy rain , this area can flood quite badly

Good park with shadows lots of trees, great walkways or cyclepath

Verulamium Park consists of 100 acres (40 hectares) of beautiful parkland close to the centre of St Albans. It hosts a load of facilities and also holds Roman architectural remains by way of the old city walls and the outline of London Gate. This is the Westiminster Lodge entrance, and there is car parking nearby.

Like that the national route marker has been painted with different colours- makes it stand out

Note that the line runs well below street level and thus needs to be accessed by a longer flight of stairs at this entry point. With a bikepacking load, a better alternative seems to be a ramp on Ambrose Lane, which I only discovered in hindsight.

Ayot Greenway is a wonderful off-road link out of Welwyn Garden City toward the Chilterns, which can be subsequently combined with The Nickey Line.

It is a nice place to see a woodland full of bluebells, not sure how long they last.

When you come out the door of St Alban's City station, turn immediately right, to join the route. The cycleway goes over a bridge, along a pathway and then left through an arch into a housing estate, it is not instinctive, it eventually drops down onto the Alban Way, then turn left!
