Lovely walk very wet and muddy in parts but snowdrops are blooming

The small village of Nuthampstead is notable for being the home to an RAF base during the Second World War. The base was used by the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, one of the War’s most iconic aircraft. The village is on the route of the Hertfordshire Way long-distance trail, which officially starts and ends in nearby Royston. If you're walking here, you can find sustenance and refreshment at the Woodman Inn.

Anstey is a gorgeous village in tranquil East Hertfordshire. Its St George's church is Grade I-listed and is notable for its Gothic Revival architecture, as well as for surviving a near miss when a Flying Fortress bomber narrowly missed crashing into it during the Second World War. If you're hungry or thirsty, there's the Blind Fiddler pub, which is named after a folk tale that originated here. It tells of a fiddler named Blind George who vanished while exploring an underground passage with his fiddle. The melodic sounds of his fiddle were replaced by blood curdling screams and then he was never heard from or seen again.

This is also the highest point *on road* in Cambs, Essex, Norfolk & Suffolk (Essex's county top is 1m higher but is in the middle of a wood - its highest point on road is 139m)

Warning: supplementary oxygen advised for the high altitude ascent to the most elevated point in the county. Cold weather clothing recommended and don’t linger too long to avoid danger of frostbite - grab your pic, maybe plant a flag, then quickly descend to safer altitudes.
