Easy going southbound and a massive downhill into Clapgate. A gut-buster northbound, as you're not out of the woods by a long chalk after your first massive climb. There's more to come, which isn't as bad, but is made so by the degree to which you haven't recovered from the initial climb at the time you reach the next, past the pub.

Just a short hop from Central London, this 520-acre (211 ha) wetland is a treat for wildlife enthusiasts and those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. These reservoirs provide drinking water for around 3.5 million people every day. Cyclists are welcome on the designated paths but be aware that pedestrians have priority here.

The River Lee was adjusted to make it navigable by boat. Some sections were straightened to shorten the journey from rural Hertfordshire into the heart of London. It's 27.5 miles (44 km) with a cycle path following the entire length. This bridge crosses at one of the locks near Tottenham and Lockwood Reservoir.

A relatively quiet way out of Ware, easier eastbound than west due to the ground and wind.
