Buck’s Alley - a little bit of Devon in Hertfordshire, reminds me of some of the foothills around the edge of Dartmoor. Charming, but go easy on the descents, gravel and blind corners mean carrying too much speed could catch you out.

A quiet little lane. Watch out for horse riders, though

Really interesting history of crime and punishment in St Albans. You can buy refreshments in the cafe and then go and eat them in the historic old courtroom. You can also go downstairs to the old cells and into the museum, where there is an excellent history of crime and punishment. There is a place to lock bikes up outside 🚴🏼‍♂️

Great to see the Cathedral

Officially the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban this is predominantly a Norman cathedral. It is thought to have been founded in the 8th century, but the building is mostly 11th century with 19th century gothic additions. It has the longest naive of any English cathedral.

Long, straight climb or descent.

If you get a chance, have a look around the inside of the cathedral. Fabulous! 🚴🏼‍♂️

Great downhill going west to east from Shenley to the M25, but also a fun uphill going the other way. Good road surface and great views, just watch out for cars as it’s narrow in places.h out for cars as it is narrow in places.

With stunning Norman architecture and the longest nave of any English cathedral, at 279 feet (85 m), St Albans cathedral is a splendid sight. It is thought to be the oldest site of continuous worship in Britain. The cathedral is open daily and there's also a shop and a cafe.

Green open and beautiful. Residents take care of the place. Nice little retreat from the city.

It is uphill going westbound. Downhill direction is a good chance to stretch the legs and lower back.

Really nice to see the llamas here, they are usually out and about and not too shy. Quiet road too with good tarmac with plenty of space to stop and enjoy the view. Farm is situated on a hill top too.

Very low traffic at most times of the day. Plenty of places to stop for a break and view, open fields and forested areas. Road can get narrow so choose a good place to let larger vehicles pass. Don't hug the kerb, some nutter drivers overtake on blind bends and I've had a few near misses where the driver has sharply pulled in after seeing an oncoming vehicle almost cutting me off. Ride defensively on blind corners and take/own your lane with consideration.

Quiet and wide road for riding in a group. Ok tarmac, some pot holes so watch out. Excellent to really get in the zone as there are no traffic lights or give ways for quite a long time. After the right hand bend a bout 2km in (travelling northbound) the road narrows and can be annoying if you have a large lorry/truck behind you as they have trouble passing safely.

Fast 40mph/65kph downhill when travelling northbound. Nice sweeping wide left turn, but careful of the right angle turn at the end. Can be easy to misjudge and go in too fast! Quiet road generally
