Just love the character that Dartmouth has to offer. The inner harbour is cute with shops and houses around it and a small park directly adjacent to it.

Great thing to do in Dartmouth is to catch a ferry from one side to the other or just get onto the water for the fun of it.

Great little place to visit. It's an English Heritage Site so free entry for members.

This American Sherman Tank was recovered from the sea in 1984. It is a memorial to those who lost their lives during exercise Tiger. Exercise Tiger was ill-fated with instances of friendly fire, miss managed communications and amidst the confusion German fast attack boats slipped in amongst the landing craft and sunk a couple. About 700 allies lost their lives here practising for the D-Day landings.

Dartmouth Castle was built in 1388 to protect the rich town's harbour against French raids. About a hundred years later the walls were strengthened, and the gun tower was added. This was the first coastal artillery installation in the UK. The castle was updated in the mid 1600s for the English civil war. It's been updated several times since then, and was used in the first and second world war. Today the castle is managed by English Heritage, it's open for visitors every day from 10:00 - 17:00. It's paid entry unless you're an English Heritage member.

Definitely worth it. A delightful little experience and cheap too

The Dartmouth to Totnes ferry takes you on a scenic river trip up or down the River Dart. It takes about one and half hours each way and costs £19 per adult (May 2023). You can only buy a return which is a shame as it's a really nice walk on the west shore of the Dart following the John Musgrave Heritage Trail. The ferry runs regularly between April and September with a restricted service in October and no sailings in the winter.

The Slapton Sands Memorial remembers both the villagers and locals who had to give up their houses to let the army and navy practise for the D Day landings and to the service men who lost their lives during this exercise. The Dartmouth Passenger ferry is one of three ferries which cross between Dartmouth and Kingswear. The passenger ferry runs about every 15mins and costs £2 per adult (May 2023 price). Ferries run every day between about 7:30 & 18:50. The car ferries which also take passengers run later.

The view north from this section of Castle Road is a nice change from most other views of Dartmouth. The Castle headland curves east to One Gun Point and this means that you can look north up the Dart Estuary to the main town of Dartmouth. You can also look across the water towards Kingswear. It's a great place to watch and bigger boats entering the harbour.

Blackpool Sands is a large scenic beach with a coarse sand to small pebble texture. It's a blue flag award winning beach for the beauty and surrounding environment. It's a privately managed beach with a pay and display car park but that's not an issue if you walk here. There is a cafe and a shop selling buckets and spades etc. You can also hire sit on top kayaks, deck chairs etc.

Dartmouth inner harbour is separated from the main river by a passage under the road. This means it's very sheltered but only available to small craft. There is a small slipway for small boats, canoes etc.

Slapton Ley is the largest natural freshwater lake in the south west, separated from the sea by a shingle beach. As a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) it was declared a National Nature Reserve (NNR) in 1993. The Nature Reserve is 1.5 miles long and covers over 490 acres of natural woodland, marshes and reedbed habitat, making it a wildlife haven for all types of birds and vegetation.

So much to do in Dartmouth, you can do a river trip or even catch the ferry to Kingswear then a steam train trip to Paignton
