The castle has an excellent cafe, and small lake on the john Musgrave trail where there are waterfowl. The castle has a haunting atmosphere and you can learn all about the Pomeroy family's residence there

Dartmouth Castle was built in 1388 to protect the rich town's harbour against French raids. About a hundred years later the walls were strengthened, and the gun tower was added. This was the first coastal artillery installation in the UK. The castle was updated in the mid 1600s for the English civil war. It's been updated several times since then, and was used in the first and second world war. Today the castle is managed by English Heritage, it's open for visitors every day from 10:00 - 17:00. It's paid entry unless you're an English Heritage member.

A 15th century castle is a ruined and apparently haunted castle in the woods east of Totnes. English Heritage manage it and there is an entrance fee for non-members. It's worth a look around if you have the time. Otherwise, you can get a good glimpse of the castle from the footpaths that run around the area.

Totnes Castle is a classic Norman motte and bailey. It's perched on a hill above the town where it would have commanded the area and the important inland harbour of the River Dart. The castle was originally an earth and timber construction. The first stone castle was built in the 13th century and then re-built as you see it today. Managed by English Heritage there is an entry fee if you're not a member but the views from the walls are well worth it.

Perched atop a hill in the town centre, Totnes Castle was once an important defence. It's one of the best-preserved Norman motte and bailey castles in England so definitely worth a visit. At the top of the hill, there are great views over the town, its surrounding countryside and the River Dart. The castle is managed by English Heritage and is open from 10am - 5pm. Tickets for adults cost £5.90.

Dartington Hall is one of Devon's most notable mansions. Not only is it the largest medieval estate in western England, it has never been fortified with walls, towers or ditches, which is very unusual for a medieval mansion. The oldest tree of the plant is a yew about 2000 years old. The center of the garden to the west is a meadow with steep grass terraces and the Twelve Apostles, a trellis of 300-year-old yews. The place was probably created in the Middle Ages as a tournament venue and today still so designated. Source and more info: Wikipedia
