Saint Stephen (or in another spelling Stephan, both variants also partly with the Latin ending "...us"), patron saint of this church in the place of the same name, is one of the first seven deacons of the original Jerusalem community and is the first martyr (martyr) of early Christianity. The church commemorates him on the second day of Christmas, December 26th. When Stephen expressed his vision of the open heaven "But he, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God" (Acts chapter 7 verse 55), the people were so outraged that they drove him out of the city and stoned him.

Legend has it that wounded soldiers gathered at this place. On the right of the cross there is a note for hikers who pass by: "Here you can rest - but also pray to your God with simple words the sacred rustling of the forest sounds jubilantly in festive chords."

The town of Sankt Stefan is a wonderful place to take a short break. It is located between Kraubath an der Mur and Sankt Michael in Upper Styria. The town is very easy to reach via the R2 Mur cycle path. The church is a beautiful yellow and white and looks simply great. You can see this beautiful church from far away.
