This ancient woodland was partly destroyed through construction of the reservoir. It is a neglected coppice of the Peterken Ash-Maple, Ash-Hazel, Pedunculate Oak-Hazel and Invasive Elm types but has been partly planted with conifers.

The church was built in classical style for the Normanton Hall estate on the site of a 14th-century building. Except for the tower, the medieval church was rebuilt in 1764 by Sir Gilbert Heathcote, 3rd Baronet. The church was de-consecrated in 1970, and was to have been demolished as part of the reservoir construction, as its floor was below the proposed water level. Following a public outcry, the lower half was filled with stone and rubble, and a concrete cap constructed just below the level of the windows.

An iconic and unusual Rutland landmark. Saved from demolition in the 1970's following public protest, the church now seems to float when the lake is full, at other times it seems as if the lower half has sunk completely, as though the church is too heavy for the ground beneath it.

Stamford has a unique blend of history, shopping and stunning Georgian architecture. Proclaimed by Sir Walter Scott as “the finest stone town in England”, it has over 600 listed buildings including five medieval churches. There is a bustling high street with coffee shops, restaurants and a range of retailers.

The historic Lincolnshire town of Stamford's old timber-framed houses and charming limestone buildings stand proud on the banks of the River Welland. It's situated where the counties of Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Rutland meet and it is the end point of the Jurassic Way long-distance trail. The nearby Burghley House and grounds – designed by the famous Capability Brown – make for an interesting day out, while a walk along the river and up to the village of Easton on the Hill is also gorgeous.

If you are walking/cycling the full circuit on the track note that Barnsdale parking is £3 compared to £10 at the other car parks and the best refreshments are at the Rutland Nurseries Cafe between Manton and the Lynton reserve, or the Horse & Jockey pub in Manton who finished their refurbishment last week.

Rutland Water is the largest man made lake in England by surface area and is situated in more than 3,000 acres (1,214 ha) of rolling countryside. The lake is a hotspot for recreation and relaxation, affording ample opportunity for hiking, cycling, fishing and watersports. It is a great place for wildlife spotting and is often home to in excess of 25,000 waterfowl. One of the most iconic features of the reservoir is Normanton Church, which was saved from demolition back in 1970 when plans were outlined to flood the area.
