A mile-long beach with a mix of sand and shingle, clear water, and a gently sloping shore. It's a great place for swimming, water sports, and walking. The beach is surrounded by cliffs and green hillsides, and is a popular spot for photographers. A flat walking area that runs alongside the beach, with a cafe at one end and the town at the other.

8월 24, 2023, Jacob's Ladder and Beach, Sidmouth
Jacob's Ladder is one of Sidmouth's two large beaches. An expanse of sand and shingle, the beach gets its name from the series of wooden steps that lead down from Connaught Gardens. Whilst the beach can be accessed via the steps it is also possible to walk around from the town's main beach via a level path. At the top of the step system there is a cafe leading to the gardens, this can be a good place to visit after a coastal run

Sign says unsuitable for cyclists but I took a chance with low water after a dry spell. Use your own judgement!

Cycling through it is no problem at all. Just be careful when you come out up the slope. Switch a little smaller. If you put too much force there, there is a risk of slipping.

6월 12, 2023, View of the Cliffs of Lyme Bay
The road between Beer and Seaton offers regular cliff and sea views. As part of the Jurassic coastline, the cliffs jut out majestically from the sea, providing ample ground for fossil hunters.

6월 12, 2023, Seaton Beach and Cliffs
Seaton's coastal beach is a mile long and overlooks Lyme Bay on the Jurassic Coast. The beach is ideal for swimming, paddling and fishing. The town itself, Devon's easternmost seaside resort, has plenty of cafes, pubs, shops and restaurants to refuel and recharge your batteries.

Norman Lockyer was a Victorian amateur astronomer, who discovered the element Helium in the Sun’s corona in 1868 and was one of the founders of the science journal Nature in 1869. He became the director of the Solar Physics Observatory at South Kensington and the first professor of astronomical physics in the Normal School of Science (now the Royal College of Science) in 1887. He was knighted in 1897. After his retirement to Sidmouth, Lockyer obtained support in 1912 for the building of the Hill Observatory, renamed the Norman Lockyer Observatory following his death in 1920.

This pretty ford over the River Sid can be cycled across if you are careful on the slope, which can be slippery at times. There's a little bridge you can walk your bike over if you'd prefer. The River Sid is claimed to be the shortest complete river in England, flowing for 6.5 miles (10.5 km) southwards from a source in Crowpits Covert.

7월 7, 2022, Beer Beach
Beer is a beautiful village in Lyme Bay, with a shingle beach and limestone cliffs. The beach is in use by fisherman so although being a sun trap, it doesn't attract the same numbers of sunbathers as other local bays. Rather than the alcoholic drink, Beer takes its name from 'bearu' which relates to the forest that previously enveloped the area. Close by are Beer Caves, created by the excavation of beer stone, a practice ongoing since Roman times. Beer Caves are open to visitors. See their website for further details http://www.beerquarrycaves.co.uk/

I followed the route on a roadbike, I would recommend avoiding going up the hill to the campsite and turning left down a track at the entrance to the campsite. Instead keep on the sustrans route 2. The track was a bit rough for my liking!
