Jacob's Ladder is one of Sidmouth's two large beaches. An expanse of sand and shingle, the beach gets its name from the series of wooden steps that lead down from Connaught Gardens. Whilst the beach can be accessed via the steps it is also possible to walk around from the town's main beach via a level path. At the top of the step system there is a cafe leading to the gardens, this can be a good place to visit after a coastal run

Sign says unsuitable for cyclists but I took a chance with low water after a dry spell. Use your own judgement!

Cycling through it is no problem at all. Just be careful when you come out up the slope. Switch a little smaller. If you put too much force there, there is a risk of slipping.

This pretty ford over the River Sid can be cycled across if you are careful on the slope, which can be slippery at times. There's a little bridge you can walk your bike over if you'd prefer. The River Sid is claimed to be the shortest complete river in England, flowing for 6.5 miles (10.5 km) southwards from a source in Crowpits Covert.

After the Protestant Reformation, many people continued to practice their Catholic faith. Devon and Cornwall were areas where instruction to change was disregarded but when Edward VI became King in 1547, he was determined to stamp this out. In 1549, The Act of Uniformity banned Catholic Liturgy replacing it legally with the Book of Common Prayer. Other events occurring at the same time which significantly impacted the people of Devon and Cornwall, such as a poll tax on sheep, combined with the imposition of the Book of Common Prayer and with it the use of the English language, resulted in a rebellion of several thousand. The rebellion was crushed and thousands massacred. The Battle of Fenny Bridges was fought just behind this memorial.

At the heart of village of Whimple is a village square and a Norman Church, St Mary's. Although fairly small, there are two pubs, a village shop and a post office. The tradition of Wassailing is enjoyed in Whimple on 17th January and it attracts many spectators. Wassailing is a pagan practice of visiting orchards on the old twelfth night to sing songs and make a lot of noise to the fruit trees to ward off bad spirits and to please the spirits of the fruit trees.

Broadclyst is situated in the Killerton Estate, owned by the National Trust. Yellow cottages line the main road which marks them out as being part of the estate. Here you will find a number of thatched cottages and even a thatched bus shelter. In 1870, a huge fire swept through the village which left 250 people homeless. Houses rebuilt after the fire are known as 'New Buildings' with around 30 original medieval properties which survived the fire.

Jacob's Ladder is the beach at the western end of Sidmouth and gets its name from the steep wooden staircase that lead down to the sand. At the top of the staircase is Connaught Gardens, a public park since 1924.

Cliffs flank either side of Sidmouth Esplanade which has been the scene of promenading since the 18th century. Until then, Sidmouth was a quiet fishing village but the fashionable appetite for fresh sea air brought people flocking to take in its restorative climate. Notable visitors include Jane Austen. The York Hotel, at the east end of the Esplanade was Sidmouth's first purpose built hotel and regency buildings can be seen all along the sea front.
