Woodbury Castle is a large Iron Age hill fort. The earthwork ditches and wall mounds are clearly visible as you run around the now wooded area.

A lovely place for a family cycle, challenging in some parts for small children and the uphill is in places brutal, but you can push.

5월 12, 2021, Café @143
Brilliant little cafe in the new town of Cranbrook, next to a Co Op and the school. There's limited outside seating but bike racks just outside. We enjoyed lovely coffees and hot paninis, vegan sausage rolls and a selection of their gorgeous cakes. Highly recommended if you're in the area, which is otherwise pretty scant for cafes like this.

Fascinating bit of history to explore here, also keep an eye out for the Jackdaws nesting in the trees.

2월 10, 2021, Woodbury Castle Iron Age Hillfort
An Iron Age hillfort now cloaked in beech trees, Woodbury Castle sits high on beautiful heathland. It has exceptional earthworks and you can roam amongst its ramparts and down into its heart. You’ll find interpretation boards dotted around the castle, explaining the importance of the fort and plenty of archaeological details. Much stewardship work has gone on in recent years, with earthwork stabilisation and strategic tree management. The castle is free to access and is a fantastic place to see in every season. It also lies within the Pebblebed Heaths Conservation Area and is home to a variety of bird, animal and plant life. Please don't ride your bike on this Scheduled Monument.

11월 3, 2020, Aylesbeare Common
A large area of habitat-rich heathland, woodlands and streams, Aylesbeare Common is a wonderful place for hiking. It’s an RSPB nature reserve and is buzzing with life during spring and summer, when butterflies, birds and dragonflies fill the air. Dartford warblers and nightjars are resident here along with plenty of other wonderful birdlife. Walking here in autumn is magical thanks to the flowering heather. The common is awash in purple and the lower light casts beautiful colours across the whole area. If you’re lucky, you might glimpse a hobby flying above.

Heathland, woodland, streams and ponds make a haven for wildlife at RSPB Aylesbeare Common, where you can find yellowhammers, dartford warblers, tree pipits, stonechats and nightjars, depending on the season. These commons form part of the East Devon pebblebed heathland, an ancient lowland habitat that was formed 235 million years ago as a desert riverbed. It's almost as if Woodbury Common was made for gravel riders and mountain bikers. Besides being the training ground for the nearby Royal Marines, the Common features a network of expansive fire roads, twisting singletracks, wooded trails and even some man-made jumps. Truly something for everyone here. Woodbury Castle, or rather the moat that remains, is a great place to start if you've made your way here by car or bike. You could spend hours or even days exploring the commonland here, in fact I've spent years here and still get a bit lost and find new parts every now and then!
