Saint JOHN BAPTIST, to whom this church in Itchen-Abbas is dedicated, is a person on the threshold of the Old and New Testaments (just like the Holy Family with Mary and Joseph). His parents are Zacharias and Elizabeth. After the announcement of the Incarnation of God through them, the Mother of God visits her relative Elizabeth, who will give birth to a son in old age, namely John the Baptist. He is half a year older than Jesus and is considered his forerunner/pioneer. He lives in the desert, preaches repentance from sins to the Jewish population and baptizes them in the Jordan. Jesus also comes there to be baptized, and is filled with the Holy Spirit who descends upon him from heaven. The feast day of Saint John Baptist in the calendar of saints is June 24th, exactly half a year before 'Christmas Eve'.

This is the main entrance to Avington House which is a beautiful family-owned private estate set in its own private parkland of 150 acres, along the banks of the River Itchen. Avington House is a Grade I listed building. Avington’s rich grounds and opulent house became a prestigious party palace that sat at the heart of the Royal Court. Now it is a private venue that can be used for bespoke weddings or private events.

Winnall Moors is a picturesque nature reserve in the centre of Winchester. The River Itchen f lows through the length of the reserve providing water for wet grassland, reedbeds, wet woodland and streams. This wetland haven is a wonderful place to escape city life and with its many paths, boardwalks and bridges there’s no need to wear wellies. Spanning 64 hectares of natural floodplain, Winnall Moors is a peaceful city centre oasis, with a diverse range of wildlife including kingfisher and roe deer. Winnall Moors is managed in partnership with Winchester City Council. During the spring this nature reserve really comes to life – reed warblers, sedge warblers and chiffchaffs sing at full volume, and marsh marigolds, yellow flag irises and cuckoo flowers adorn the meadow like jewels in the crown of England’s ancient capital. Itchen Abbas church of St John the Baptist, is a fine Victorian building that hides a much earlier church. Alas the old church placed a great burden on the parish as its ancient walls and tower fell into decay and became unsafe. The church has some architectural remains that suggest it was built in the Norman period but may itself have replaced an earlier Saxon church.
