7월 3, 2024, Bickleigh Mill & The Bridge Inn
Using the power of moving water to drive a mill wheel is an ancient invention of the human spirit of discovery, the origins of which can be traced back to times long past. Thanks to such a construction, human or animal muscle power could be easily replaced by the power of the natural elements through a watercourse - natural or artificially created - in order to grind grain into corn or press oil from fruit, for example. There are essentially two different ways of driving watermills: * Either the flowing water simply hits the blades of the water wheel from below to set it in motion; or * the water is guided above the wheel - usually through a so-called "mill channel" - and falls onto the blades; this type of construction is more efficient due to natural gravity.

The duo also visited the site of Bickleigh Bridge, a picturesque spot in East Devon. However, on a promotional tour in 2003, Garfunkel confirmed the song was inspired by sources closer to their home

11월 3, 2022, Bickleigh Mill & The Bridge Inn
Bickleigh Mill is an 18th century water mill which is still working to this day. The Mill is now also home to shops and eateries. With its gorgeous riverside location it is a lovely place to start or finish a walk, or stop partway along to refuel.

11월 3, 2022, River Exe at Tiverton
The River Exe flows all the way from Exmoor in the north to Exmouth in the south. The Exe Valley Way follows the river from the Exe Estuary to Exford on Exmoor. Not quite all the way to the source of the river but you can add on that additional stretch if you wish to. The official route is 72km (45 miles long) and is way marked. This section here between Tiverton and Bickleigh would make a nice day out, starting at either end. Its around 11km there and back and fairly flat.

The inspiration for Paul Simon to write the song (according to local legend). Beware of traffic when crossing - it's single carriageway and a fairly busy road.

Great place for lunch or a Devon cream tea (cream first, jam on top - the proper way - this is Devon!). There's also a gift shop adjoining.

The Trout Inn at Bickleigh closed down in 2018. Other options for refreshment in Bickleigh are the Fisherman's Cot or Bickleigh Mill - both do meals and both are licenced.

Bickleigh Castle is a lovely manor house on the banks of the River Exe. Although the main building was destroyed during the Civil War, the central courtyard and other historic buildings still stand today. The original Norman motte castle was built in the late 11th century. Nowadays, the castle is used to host weddings, but it's still an interesting place to stop and take a look.

1월 14, 2021, The Fisherman's Cot Pub
The Fisherman's Cot pub occupies a rather lovely position on the banks of the River Exe and sits opposite the 17th-century Bickleigh Bridge. While the pub is lovely all by itself, it is also famous for something else. In the 60s, Paul Simon visited and is said to have got his inspiration for the song, 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', after seeing the Exe flow beneath Bickleigh Bridge. Once you know this, it's impossible to cross the bridge without getting the song stuck in your head, as I can attest. Lucky it's a fantastic piece of music.

Exploring Bickleigh Castle on one of their tours is taking a rather large step back in history. The chapel was originally built in 600 AD and the castle itself is listed in the 1086 Domesday Book. Damaged during the Civil War, the estate was once larger although it remains an impressive site.
