3월 8, 2025, Cottam Power Station
I believe this used to be a coal power station that was decommissioned in 2019. The cooling towers are quite impressive, and the wide gravel track passes very close to them.

3월 8, 2025, View of Torksey Viaduct
Torksey Viaduct is closed. I was there on Friday 7th March 2025 and I ended up cycling south on A road to Dunham Bridge and back north to rejoin the route (Lincoln Gravel Imp). The viaduct may reopen in the future if a new leaseholder is found. Here is some info I found about the closure railwaypaths.org.uk/category/latest-news

The viaduct creates a link between Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. The structure offers fantastic views of the ruined Torksey Castle.

2월 27, 2025, View of Torksey Castle
Torksey Castle was a country house built in 1560 by Sir Robert Jermyn. It was destroyed during the English Civil War in 1645. Today, only the west facade and part of the rear wall remain. Though the Jermyn family retained control of the estate after the Civil War, the property was not restored, but continued to deteriorate. The remains of the buildings were scavenged for usable building supplies by residents of the area. Also, the hall was built quite close to the flood-prone River Trent, which may have stood the family in good stead as a source of transportation and commerce (as the Lords of Torksey had been permitted to levy tolls on the river's travellers), but which also contributed to the damage of the building through flooding. In 1961, the Trent River Board buried part of the ruins when raising the river bank.

2월 27, 2025, St Margaret's Church, Knaith
In the centre of the village stands the church of St Margaret. The building is essentially of the Norman Conquest period, built using a mixture of Anglo-Saxon and Norman styles. Much of the work of these periods is still retained. It has an 11th-century tower of herringbone masonry, a Saxon cross shaft set in an outer wall and an ancient carved crucifix within. The tall cross in the churchyard is used as a war memorial and it is thought to be a former Medieval market buttercross.

Rumour has it that before its demolition, the crossing was used by King Harold, William the Conqueror and Dick Turpin - not all at once! 😅 Part of a Heritage Trail created by the local school.

A railway bridge built in 1849 and designed by John Fowler. This is one of the earliest box girder bridges and is a rare survival.

With steps at one end you'll have to carry the bike but with no other way to cross the river for miles you may not have much choice

Torksey Viaduct is not currently suited for cycling as there are a set of steep steps up to the viaduct on the West bank. Sustrans plans on extending the route to enable it to be used for cycling in the future. Torksey Viaduct is a rare example of a tubular box bridge, completed more than 150 years ago as part of the Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway. It is now a footpath across the River Trent linking Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.

Straddling the River Trent, Torksey Viaduct is a rare and early example of a tubular box bridge. The bridge consists of 2 equal box girder spans supported on a single central pier and double side piers. It was completed more than 150 years ago as part of the Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway, but it took the engineer Sir John Fowler 4 months to convince the Railway Commissioners that it was strong enough. It closed in 1959, and has been out of use ever since. It is grade II* listed and on the Heritage at Risk register. Torksey Viaduct was officially opened as a walking route on the 22nd April 2016 by Sir William McAlpine, Chair of the Railway Heritage Trust. The viaduct creates a new link across the River Trent between Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, giving people the chance to explore the area on foot. Sustrans plans on extending the route to enable it to be used for cycling too in the future. Refurbishment of the viaduct took 18 months, with the help of funding from the Railway Heritage Trust. The restoration involved protecting native species including barn owls and badgers who had made the viaduct their home after it being out of use for over 50 years. Photos below show the refurbishment in process, and some interesting visitors.

Torksey Castle is an Elizabethan manor house on the east bank of the River Trent. It is a 16th century Tudor stone-built, fortified manor house founded by the Jermyn family of Suffolk. It is a Grade-1 listed building and stands on private land with no public access. It is only visible from the A156 road and a public footpath on the west bank of the River Trent (location of photo).

Completed in 1849, it carried the main line of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway over the River Trent. The railway closed in 1959 but was restored and opened to the public in 2015. It is a Grade II listed.
